Challenge
A culvert in New Vineyard, ME had a significant infiltration problem at two pipe joints which led to culvert joint separation, erosion issues, and pavement settlement. The infiltration at the joints had caused the backfill around the pipe to create a void around the joint and cause the pavement to settle. The corrugated metal culvert had been replaced 15 years ago, however, it was improperly backfilled and the joints were not watertight. Over time the infiltration caused the pipe to settle as well as the backfill to infiltrate into the pipe.

Engineered Solution
HydraTech implemented an engineered solution to address these issues. Although the HydraTite Seals are installed on smooth wall pipes to prevent infiltration they can also be designed for corrugated surfaces. The Flexibility of the HydraTite seal makes it a great option for eliminating infiltration without having to disrupt traffic or bypass the pipe.

Scope
The job consisted of the installation of 2 HydraTite Seals that were 108” in diameter to eliminate infiltration as the two joints that had failed. The surface was filled with rubber to provide a smooth surface for a watertight seal solution.

Solution
HydraTite enables a trenchless repair at a fraction of the cost of fully lining the pipeline or excavation. The sealed joints eliminated infiltration and stopped the settlement of the pavement. The job was done quickly and without disruption to traffic. HydraTite is a solution not only for failing concrete joints but corrugated metal drainage pipes as well.
