CONCRETE CONFINEMENT UTILIZING FIBERGLASS
Icon WriterCaleb Rutledge, 5/18/2023

The Department of Transportation had recently replaced the bridge deck and reached out to HydraTech Field Services to wrap the 15 columns with fiberglass. The surface was prepared by pressure washing and grinding. Next, thickened epoxy is used to fill minor divets and imperfections. The fiberglass was wrapped around the columns and a weather-resistant coating was applied atop that.

There are environmental considerations that have to be made to ensure the epoxy cures correctly. Artificial means can be used to produce the correct temperature and humidity, but for this installation, we worked around the weather. Despite this necessitating some off days, the project was completed in about 3 weeks.
